Since 1970, Shinju Matsuri, Broome’s Festival of the Pearl, has been an iconic part of Western Australia’s regional events program. It’s a celebration of the city’s unique and diverse culture and history. It has an extensive program of events that delight the senses of sight, sound, and taste.

Shinju Matsuri Festival originated from three cultural festivals, including Japanese Obon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Merdeka, and the Chinese Hang Seng. It rekindles the excitement and romance of Broome’s early days as a world-renowned producer of South Sea Pearls, where people from various backgrounds, such as Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepangers, Filipino, and Europeans, flocked to be part of the flourishing prosperity. This multicultural legacy, combined with the contributions of local Aboriginal people and Europeans, saw up to 400 Pearling Luggers sailing out of Broome.

The modern Shinju has a mix of events including the highly anticipated long table dinner on Cable Beach, the lantern festival at Ganrtheaume Point, and a multitude of cultural fringe events around Broome. Every nook and cranny has something in store to explore.
